Most homeowners only ever see the top of the deck, but the strength and safety of the whole structure are decided by the posts, beams, joists, and hardware underneath. Let’s start with the main parts. Posts carry the load down to the footings. Beams sit on those posts and carry the joists. Joists run under the deck boards and support the surface you walk on. When each of these pieces is sized and spaced properly, the deck feels solid under your feet. When any part is undersized or overspanned, you start to feel bounce, sag, or movement.
